Kirby grew up in greater Minnesota and is a 2006 graduate of Dassel-Cokato High School.  After high school, Kirby attended the University of North Dakota where he majored in sociology and minored in Norwegian. Kirby’s Norwegian studies came in handy during Kirby’s semester long stint in Norway. Kirby completed his undergraduate studies in 2010, and jumped into law school the following fall semester.  Kirby graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2013.  Along the way, Kirby competed in numerous moot court events and was named to the Order of Barristers.

Kirby was admitted to the North Dakota bar in 2013 and he spent the first three years of his legal career in North Dakota serving as a Judicial Law Clerk for the judges of the North Central Judicial District in Minot, North Dakota and in private practice in Fargo, North Dakota.  Kirby joined Sanford, Pierson, Thone, and Strean in October 2016.  He is licensed to practice law in North Dakota and Minnesota state courts, as well as the U.S. District for the District of North Dakota. His legal practice focuses primarily on civil litigation and creditor remedies. 

 

When not in the office, Kirby enjoys spending time with his family, playing basketball and golf, metal-detecting, hunting, and fishing.

Andrew Meyer grew up in Hopkins and Minnetonka, and is a 2004 graduate of Hopkins High School.  He is a 2008 graduate of St. Olaf College, in Northfield, MN. Andrew attended the University of Minnesota Law School, graduating cum laude in 2011.  In law school, Andrew worked at the Ramsey County Public Defender’s Office for two years.  After law school, Andrew moved to southwestern Minnesota to practice at a small firm doing a little bit of everything.

Andrew joined Sanford, Pierson, Thone & Strean in the fall of 2015.  He enjoys helping clients navigate all manner of legal areas including, business law, real estate, litigation, estate planning, family law, and criminal law.

In his free time, Andrew spends time with his wife and daughter.  He enjoys playing basketball, and golf.  He loves traveling and photography.

Cole A. Hickman joined Sanford, Pierson, Thone & Strean as an associate attorney in 2014 and became a partner of the firm in 2016. Cole’s primary practice areas include estate planning and representing closely held businesses.  He strives to give each client personalized and dedicated attention and has built a strong reputation in the legal community. Cole’s clients have ranged from individuals and start-ups to Fortune 5 companies.  He is licensed to practice law in Minnesota and North Dakota State Courts as well as the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.

 

Estate Planning

Cole is the chair of the firm’s Estate Planning and Probate Practice Group.  Cole works closely with individuals and families to plan the disposition of their assets, both during their lifetimes and upon death, and prepares a variety of estate planning instruments including wills, trusts, health care directives, and powers of attorney.                  

Cole assists his clients in mitigating estate tax by drafting such documents as disclaimer trusts, credit shelter trusts, and irrevocable life insurance trusts.  He also prepares documents designed to avoid probate such as revocable living trusts and transfer on death deeds.  

Cole also works with clients after the death of a family member.  In this role, he assists his clients and their families in carrying out the decedent’s final wishes.  He counsels personal representatives, trustees, and beneficiaries through probate and the trust administration process.

 

Closely Held Business Law 

Cole’s representation of closely held businesses includes drafting corporate documents, litigation (including pre-litigation and litigation avoidance), and mergers and acquisitions. Cole has first chair trial experience and has argued cases before the Minnesota Court of Appeals for his business clients.  Cole also works with clients to develop tax efficient business succession strategies. 

 

In his free time, Cole enjoys playing hockey, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends.

Project Manager

SANFORD PIERSON, THONE & STREAN, PLC has practice areas in business organizations, litigation, real estate, creditor remedies, estate planning and probate. We are currently seeking an indivdual with zero to five years of experience to fill the role of a project manager.  Some of the responsiblities will include:

Marketing Project Management

  • Participates in the creation and implementation of firm and individual attorney marketing plan(s) to ensure timely completion of plan milestones within budget
  • Coordinates firm and individual attorney marketing calendars: including events, presentations, networking luncheons, meetings and connections
  • Prepares/organizes materials for events/presentations
  • Manages and updates content on firm website, including coordinating and circulating blog content
  • Manages firm and individual attorney LinkedIn pages and identifies and implements future social media platforms for the firm
  • Schedules, prepares agenda, attends and takes minutes at monthly firm marketing meetings and distributes action items as tasks to assigned attorneys; follows up on assigned tasks to ensure completion or delegation
  • Prepares/coordinates electronic and print correspondence, including newsletters, e-blasts, and client retention correspondence 
  • Utilizes Client Relationship Management Software

Legal Project Management for one-two attorney(s)

  • Analyzes, monitors and plans with attorney(s) regarding files and file-related tasks to ensure timely completion or delegation
  • Accounts for and records billable time associated with file management and support
  • Drafts, reviews and edits a variety of documentation, including letters and legal documents
  • Electronic and paper filing (internally in accordance with office protocol for file management, with governmental agencies such as the Secretary of State and Office of the County Recorder, and within state and federal court systems)
  • Thinks critically to identify and propose ways to implement new processes and procedures to improve existing operations
  • Maintain utmost confidentiality regarding client communication, correspondence, files, and documentation

    Chris has over 20 years of experience providing legal representation and counseling to individuals and their businesses, often in connection with transactions.  His business clients range from start-up entities to mid-sized corporations, providing him substantial experience with: entity selection and formation; shareholder, member and partner relations; restructurings; sales and purchases of assets and businesses; exit strategies; and dissolution and winding up.   

    He represents many clients in real estate transactions, both commercial and residential.  He has advised regarding sales, purchases and leasing of everything from undeveloped single lots to large commercial manufacturing properties.  He also has worked with a number of developers and builders on development projects. Often his residential real estate work involves properties of the owners of his business clients.

    Largely due to the demand of his business clients, Chris has developed expertise in estate planning and probate. Often the challenge is to make sure the client’s business plan aligns with the client’s estate plan.

    Chris is married to wife Becky and has two children, Maggie and Christopher.  As a product (Wayzata High School class of 1980) of the same Wayzata community in which the firm is located, he has been very active in all kinds of community events and served numerous community organizations.  When not practicing law or attending community meetings, he loves to be outdoors, sail, ski, read, coach kids, and spectate at any event in which Maggie or Christopher participates.
